So it's time for the 19th annual South by Southwest Music and Media Conference. If you're wondering what the heck it is, I don't exactly know either. I gather that it's a get together for bands, fans, etc. to get together. What I do know about it is that they asked each of the 1,595 attending artists to donate a track of music and came up with about 750 mp3s available for a 2.6G torrent download. It's partly meant as a portable schedule that will show on an iPod and music is just a "bonus".

I'm halfway through the letter "B" now after listening on and off for a couple days. Genres vary from bluegrass and country to punk and heavy metal with occasional offshoots into reggae and latin influenced music. I recommend it to my friends who like exposure to all kinds of weird music they've never heard before. Some is mediocre, but I haven't found anything absolutely unlistenable yet.

If you're one of my friends who doesn't know what the heck Bit Torrent is, drop me a line and I'll help you get started or make other arrangements.

Either way, you may want to check out the festival home page. They've got some interesting things happening. If you've got any geekiness about music and film, you'll find it interesting.
