I was listening to a podcast of The Pab Sungenis Project (like Dr. Demento, but with some serious stuff thrown in) and heard reference to a re-vamp of the Cookie Monster. So I looked up this article in the Brattleboro Reformer.

Give him back his cookies!

BRATTLEBORO

Oh my God, we've hit an all time Politically Correct low. Cooookie! How can that be bad? It can't be. Look, I know I'm getting old, but when I was watching the Cookie Monster run around eating cookies, it was funny -- not a source for a social problem such as childhood obesity.

You can still hear the song in your head, can't you? "'C' is for cookie, that's good enough for me..." As I'm writing this, I can't stop the tune in my head. But now, because we have childhood obesity problems, the furry blue puppet has to start singing a different tune.

They actually changed the Cookie Monster's tune to "A Cookie is a Sometimes Food." What!? Are you kidding me? Look, I watched more Sesame Street than the average kid. I was into it. My favorite Muppets were Snuffleupagus and the Cookie Monster. But as for my folks thinking that I was going to turn into a recluse and only appear to one person? Let's just say it never entered their minds.

As for the Cookie Monster, my parents never gave it a second thought that a puppet would control the way their child ate. See, they were the kind of parents that controlled their kid's food intake. If they didn't want us eating cookies, then cookies never came in the house. If they didn't want us drinking soda, they didn't buy it. It's a pretty simple rule.
